Youth Marijuana Use Prevention
Linn County Youth Marijuana Prevention Campaign
A collaboration between Linn Together, the Linn County Alcohol and Drug Program, the Linn County Juvenile Department and the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
Aimed at middle school students and their parents, the “Level Up” Youth Marijuana Prevention Campaign uses relatable themes—Control, Reach, and Protect—to highlight both the benefits of avoiding marijuana and the risks associated with youth use.
Using imagery drawn from gaming, sports, and social media, the campaign delivers a clear message: choosing to stay marijuana-free supports better brain health, stronger mental health, and greater school success.
The campaign features local billboards, posters, rack cards, social media ads, and themed giveaways such as stickers and shoelaces. These materials are designed to spark conversation and encourage positive choices.

Linn County STAND Youth Council
The Linn County STAND Youth Council is made up of high school students from across the county who are dedicated to promoting healthy choices and building positive school environments.
One of their key focus areas is preventing youth marijuana use. STAND members support the Level Up Youth Marijuana Prevention Campaign by leading outreach activities at local middle and high schools. These efforts include displaying posters, airing announcements, and sharing popular items—like sunglasses and pens—featuring positive prevention messages.
STAND students also created a short video to help parents start meaningful conversations with their kids about the risks of youth marijuana use.

Botvin’s LifeSkills Training
LifeSkills is an 8–10 week prevention program that helps students build the confidence and skills they need to make healthy choices and avoid alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. Rather than just sharing facts, LifeSkills lessons focus on real-world situations and practical strategies students can use every day.
As part of the program, students explore the risks of youth marijuana use through engaging, age-appropriate lessons. The emphasis is on prevention—equipping students with tools and knowledge before they encounter peer pressure or risky situations.
Topics include:
- The short- and long-term effects of marijuana use
- How peer pressure and media can influence choices
- Resistance and refusal skills
- Personal values and decision-making
