Linn County STAND Youth Council
The Linn County STAND Youth Council is a group of high school students from across the county who are committed to promoting healthy choices and creating positive school environments.
One of their focus areas is preventing youth vaping. As part of their outreach, STAND members created a short video to help parents start conversations with their kids about the risks of vaping. [Watch the video here.]
Botvin’s LifeSkills Training
LifeSkills is an 8–10 week prevention program offered to 4th and 6th grade students in every Linn County school district. The program helps students avoid alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. Instead of just sharing facts, the program teaches real-life skills students can use to make healthy choices.
As part of the LifeSkills program, students learn about the risks of tobacco and vaping through engaging, age-appropriate lessons. The focus is on prevention—giving young people the tools they need before they’re faced with peer pressure or risky choices.
Students learn:
- The health risks of tobacco and nicotine products
- Common myths vs. facts about vaping
- How to recognize peer pressure
- Assertive refusal skills they can use in real-life situations
